Stay Awake in Prayer
Scripture: Epistle to the Colossians 4:2
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
Prayer is not meant to be an occasional emergency call to God. In Colossians, the apostle Paul the Apostle urges believers to devote themselves to prayer—to live in a posture of constant connection with God. The instruction is simple but powerful: stay awake, stay aware, and stay thankful.
The idea of being watchful in prayer means keeping our spiritual eyes open. Life can easily lull us into distraction—busy schedules, worries, entertainment, and endless noise. When we drift into spiritual sleep, we stop noticing where God is moving or where He wants us to step in with faith.
But prayer wakes us up.
When we stay awake in prayer, we begin to see differently. We notice the needs of others. We recognize God’s guidance. We sense when temptation is creeping in. Prayer keeps our hearts alert and our spirits tuned to heaven.
The verse also tells us to remain thankful. Gratitude transforms prayer from a list of requests into a relationship of trust. Even when answers haven’t come yet, thankfulness reminds us that God is already working.
Your song “Stay Awake in Prayer” echoes this call: don’t drift into spiritual sleep. Stay present with God. Stay attentive to His voice. Stay grateful for His faithfulness.
Prayer is not about perfect words. It’s about a heart that refuses to disconnect.
So today, slow down and reconnect. Lift your eyes. Stay awake in prayer.

Prayer
Lord,
Help me stay awake in prayer. When my mind becomes distracted or my heart grows tired, draw me back into Your presence. Teach me to be watchful and aware of what You are doing around me. Fill my heart with gratitude so that my prayers are full of faith and thankfulness. Keep my spirit alert and connected to You every day.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
