Daily Devotion – Make Me New
Psalm 51:2–10
“Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin…
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:2,10
There’s something powerful about asking God to make us clean. It’s not a polished prayer. It’s not religious performance. It’s raw. Honest. Vulnerable.
In Psalm 51, David isn’t pretending. He’s not minimizing his failure or blaming someone else. He’s owning it. “Wash me… cleanse me… create in me a clean heart.” He knows behavior modification isn’t enough. He needs heart transformation.
That’s the cry behind Make Me Clean.
Sometimes we try to “do better” instead of coming clean. We promise we’ll try harder. Pray more. Fix ourselves. But David shows us the better way: bring it into the light and let God do what only God can do.
Notice the language:
Wash me thoroughly — not surface-level change.
Cleanse me — not cover it up.
Create in me — not repair, but remake.
The word create echoes Genesis. It’s the same idea as when God formed the world out of nothing. David is saying, “God, I don’t just need improvement. I need new creation.”
And that’s the hope of this song and this psalm: God is not intimidated by your mess. He is drawn to repentance. He responds to surrender. When we confess, He cleanses. When we open our hands, He renews our spirit.
Today, don’t hide. Don’t justify. Don’t carry shame another day.
Pray the prayer. Sing the song. Let Him make you clean.
Prayer
Father,
Wash me thoroughly. Not halfway. Not just on the outside.
Search my heart and show me what needs to change.
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a right spirit within me.
Where I’ve failed, bring mercy.
Where I’m broken, bring restoration.
Where I feel shame, speak forgiveness.
I surrender it all to You.
Make me clean.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
