Hold My Tongue
Scripture: Proverbs 10:19
There’s something uncomfortable about silence.
When things feel unfair, when emotions rise, when someone says something that hits the wrong way—silence feels like losing. Like we’re supposed to defend ourselves immediately or we’ll be misunderstood.
But Proverbs 10:19 cuts straight through that instinct. It doesn’t say silence makes you weak—it says wisdom often looks like restraint. Not every thought deserves airtime. Not every reaction deserves release.
The truth is, words don’t disappear after they’re spoken. They build things. They break things. They leave marks that time doesn’t always erase quickly.
And that’s why this song is really a prayer:
“God, don’t just change my heart—slow my mouth down enough so my heart has time to catch up.”
Because maturity in faith isn’t just knowing Scripture. It’s learning timing. It’s learning when to speak truth in love—and when to let peace do the talking.
Jesus Himself didn’t answer every accusation thrown at Him. Sometimes He stayed silent, not because He lacked words, but because He trusted the Father with the outcome.
That kind of silence isn’t empty. It’s full of trust.
So today, this becomes a simple prayer:
“Lord, guard my mouth. Not so I have nothing to say—but so everything I say looks like You.”
And sometimes, the most powerful testimony in the room… is a calm spirit refusing to react in anger.
