Better Is One Day With You
Psalm 84:10–12
“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” — Psalm 84:10
There are many things in life that promise satisfaction—success, comfort, recognition, security. Yet the psalmist makes a bold declaration: one single day in the presence of God is better than a thousand days anywhere else.
The heart behind the song “Better Is One Day With You” echoes this truth. God’s presence is not just an experience we visit occasionally; it is the place where our souls truly come alive. When we draw near to Him in worship, prayer, and quiet surrender, we discover that nothing in the world compares to being close to Him.
Psalm 84 paints a picture of longing. The writer desires God’s house so deeply that even being a humble doorkeeper would be enough. Why? Because proximity to God is greater than prestige, comfort, or earthly success. His presence brings joy, strength, and purpose that the world cannot provide.
Verses 11–12 continue the promise: God is a sun and shield. He gives grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk with Him. When we choose God above everything else, we are not losing anything—we are gaining what our hearts were created for.
The truth is simple but powerful: one moment with God can refresh a weary heart, restore hope, and realign our perspective. A life centered around His presence becomes a life full of light and blessing.
Today, slow down and seek Him. Even a few moments of sincere worship or prayer can remind your heart why being with Him is better than anything the world could offer.
Reflection
What competes for your attention and affection more than time with God? How might your day change if you intentionally prioritized His presence?
Prayer
Lord,
Better is one day with You than a thousand anywhere else. Draw my heart closer to Your presence today. Help me to value time with You above all the distractions and pursuits of this world. Be my sun and my shield, guiding me with Your grace and filling my life with Your goodness. Teach me to seek You first and to find my deepest joy in You.
Amen.
