Before the Sun Goes Down
Scripture: Ephesians 4:26–27
“Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.”
Anger is a powerful emotion. It can rise quickly in moments of hurt, misunderstanding, or frustration. In this passage, Paul doesn’t say we will never feel angry. Instead, he gives us a warning and a boundary: don’t allow anger to remain long enough to take root in your heart.
The phrase “do not let the sun go down on your anger” reminds us that unresolved anger grows in the darkness. What begins as a moment of hurt can quietly become bitterness, resentment, or distance in our relationships if it lingers.
The heart of the song “Before the Sun Goes Down” echoes this truth. It calls us to bring our anger, wounds, and conflicts to God quickly—before they harden our hearts. God invites us to deal with these emotions honestly but also to release them in forgiveness and humility.
When we hold on to anger, we unknowingly give the enemy space to divide and discourage us. But when we bring our frustrations to God and seek reconciliation with others, we close that door and allow peace to take its place.
Today, if there is anger in your heart—toward a friend, family member, coworker, or even yourself—bring it before the Lord. Ask Him to soften your heart. Seek forgiveness where needed. Extend grace where possible.
Don’t carry today’s anger into tomorrow’s sunrise. Let God’s peace settle your heart before the sun goes down.
Reflection Questions
Is there someone I need to forgive today?
Am I holding onto anger longer than God intended?
What step can I take today toward reconciliation?
Prayer
Lord, You see every emotion in my heart. When anger rises in me, help me respond with wisdom and grace. Teach me to forgive quickly and seek peace in my relationships. Guard my heart from bitterness, and fill me with Your Spirit so that no foothold is given to the enemy. Help me release my anger and rest in Your peace before the sun goes down. Amen.
