Turn The Other Cheek
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:38–39
"But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also."
These words of Jesus have challenged believers for centuries. At first glance, they seem impossible. Everything inside us wants justice, revenge, or at least the satisfaction of getting even. Yet Jesus points us toward a higher kingdom where love is stronger than hatred and mercy is greater than revenge.
Turning the other cheek doesn't mean pretending evil doesn't exist or allowing abuse to continue. Jesus wasn't teaching us to become doormats. He was teaching us not to let another person's sin determine our response. Instead of being controlled by anger, we're called to be led by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus lived these words perfectly. He was mocked, falsely accused, beaten, and crucified, yet He prayed, "Father, forgive them." His forgiveness opened the door for our salvation. Every act of mercy we show points back to the mercy we've already received through Him.
Forgiveness is rarely easy. Sometimes it feels costly because it is. It means releasing our desire for personal revenge and trusting God to be the perfect Judge. Romans 12 reminds us not to repay evil for evil but to overcome evil with good. When we choose grace, we aren't saying the wrong was acceptable—we're declaring that God's justice and God's love are greater than our anger.
There may be someone in your life whose words or actions still hurt. Ask the Lord to help you surrender that pain to Him. He can heal wounds that resentment never could. As Christ changes your heart, you'll discover that forgiveness brings freedom—not just for the other person, but for you as well.
Today, ask yourself:
Is there someone I need to forgive?
Am I trusting God with justice instead of trying to take it into my own hands?
How can I reflect the mercy Jesus has shown me?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing me mercy when I didn't deserve it. Forgive me for the times I've held on to anger or wanted revenge. Fill me with Your Spirit and give me the strength to respond with grace, even when it's difficult. Help me love as Jesus loved and trust You to handle justice in Your perfect way. Let my life reflect Your mercy so others may see Christ in me.

Reflection
Every time you choose forgiveness over revenge, kindness over bitterness, and peace over retaliation, you demonstrate the transforming power of the gospel. The world expects revenge. Followers of Jesus reveal something far greater—His love.
